Finished Piece #1

Here is one of my finished pieces, like I promised (and on time too! ;P). This was an assignment that we did in class to focus on how highlights and shadows define shape. It was also the first drawing I ever did with black and white charcoal on toned paper. I was (and still am) extremely proud of how it came out. I am very happy with the way I captured the highlights and shadows on the bow. I took nearly twice as long as most of the other people in my class to do this, but you probably know how high school art classes go (I was one of the only people there to seriously work on art).

Looking back on this piece, I probably would have added a shadow underneath the bow to give it some sense of place/ weight. I'm not sure if I left it out on purpose, or if there was just no shadow from the angle I was looking at it. It was over a year ago so I honestly can't remember haha.

Hope you enjoy this piece of art and once again, I always welcome comments and constructive criticism!

Sketch #2

Wellll..... I am clearly not doing so well with this update schedule already, but I will definitely stick to it next week, and hopefully every week after that!

So this one is a sketch done in conte of a lemon and a pepper. It was another one of my firsts, and looking back on it I really could have pushed the value a lot more and paid more attention to the highlights, especially on the pepper (although I remember them being quite tricky). The background also needs some work, which is one thing I think I've gotten better at since then, although I still never seem to know what to do with the background in still-lifes. In this drawing though, it really does nothing to give the scene a sense of space. But hey, you've got to start somewhere, and this drawing was done almost at the very beginning of my art education. I'd have to say I've come a long way since I drew this.

So for next week, you can expect one of my more finished pieces, just to mix it up a bit. And don't forget, comments and constructive criticism are always welcome!

Update Schedule

I've decided that I want to stick to a once-a-week update schedule, so there will be a new post every Monday. With my insanely busy life as a very involved student, I think this is the best I can manage for now. Plus, it will ensure that I don't post content faster than I can create it, as most of my work right now is done in school. Unfortunately, I don't have much time to create a whole lot of art on my own time, but that will change once I get out of school, and once I've finished my all-consuming AP Studio Art and AP Calculus classes. I've also started an online animation class through my high school and would like to add these flash animations to my posts, but I still need to figure out how to format the flash file so it can be viewed on this blog. I'm using Flash 8 right now (yes my school is still in the stone age :/) and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Sketch #1

Last year I took my first basic drawing class in school. In that class, we had to do weekly sketchbook assignments based on certain criteria. I believe this assignment was to draw a cylinder. It was one of the first that we had all year, and one of the first of many, many more to come.
